Held every year on May 3 and 5 on the Edogawa riverbed. The kites are made of washi paper and bamboo over three months by members of the Showa Giant Kite Culture Preservation Society of Kasukabe City.
First, a ceremony is held in front of the giant kites to pray for the health and happy growth of children celebrating their first Boys' or Girls' Day that year. Then the Kamiwaka and Shimowaka teams each fly their own giant kite.
Over a hundred people fly each giant kite, and more than 100,000 spectators come to watch. As the crowds filling the riverbed look on, the giant kite soars into the sky—a truly heroic sight. Small kites, Komachi kites and kites bearing company names also fly alongside, adding to the festive mood.
